Angel Inn

LARLING, Norwich, NR16 2QU

On the edge of Breckland and Thetford Forest Park, this 17th-century former coaching inn has been run for more than 80 years by three generations of the Stammers family and has a good local feel and warm welcome. In the beamed public bar, a jukebox, dartboard and fruit machine add to the traditional feel, while the oak-panelled lounge bar has dining tables with cushioned wheel-back chairs, a wood-burner and a collection of water jugs. Five ales, including Crouch Vale Brewers Gold, are served, as well as more than a hundred whiskies. Menus make good use of local ingredients, with lighter snacks including sandwiches, jacket potatoes, ploughman's, burgers and salads. Typically among the mains are tiger prawn balti; chicken and bacon fusilli; lamb chops with mint sauce; or Stilton and mushroom bake. Look out for the August festival, with over 100 real ales.
