Tucked away in the wooded Stoneycombe Valley, close to Torquay and Newton Abbot, this former flour mill dates from the 13th-century. Now a family-owned free house, the spacious property blends old and new in a fresh contemporary style. It comprises an attractive bar with roaring log fires and comfy sofas, and a restaurant separated into three areas - The Fireside, The Mill Room and The Panel Room. While perusing the appealing menu enjoy a pint of Otter or Teignworthy ale. Dishes are freshly prepared using quality produce from the local area. Fish from Brixham is a feature of the daily specials, along with regulars like smoked duck breast, orange, watercress and pine nut salad; pan-fried field mushrooms, garlic and tarragon cream on toast; whole grilled plaice, caper and parsley butter, chargrilled lemon, new potatoes; roast pork belly, black pudding and bacon potato cake with cider gravy; rum and raisin cheesecake. An 18th-century former barn has been transformed into a function room catering for groups of 25 to 125 guests. There is outside decking and a tranquil garden for the warmer weather.
