The Swan is a glorious, tiny 15th-century village inn huddled in the shadow of the craggy Windgather Rocks in the Cheshire Peak District. A consortium of locals bought the place over six years ago to save it from closure. Now safe and thriving in private hands again, the eclectic and international menu has interesting dishes such as 'stifado', a Greek rabbit stew slow-cooked with red wine, cinnamon, shallots and currants; and chicken jambonette, a chicken leg stuffed with duck and sausage meat, wrapped in proscuitto ham and smoky bacon. Local craft beers keep ramblers and locals very contented, especially at the pub's beer festival on the first weekend in September.
