Threlkeld Village, KESWICK, CA12 4SQ
From this lovely, late 17th-century Lakeland inn at the foot of Blencathra there are wonderful views across to the Helvellyn range. Within its thick, whitewashed stone walls you'll find slate-flagged floors, beamed ceilings and open log fires, with hunting prints decorating the traditional bars and panelled snug. Cockermouth's Jennings and a guest brewery supply the real ales. The pub has a reputation for good food, dependent on a long-standing commitment to local, seasonal produce and continuing with its preparation in the 'gleaming kitchen'. Restaurant starters include buffalo mozzarella, vine tomato and air-dried prosciutto; and breaded garlic mushrooms. Likely contenders among the mains could be smoked haddock, chive mash; lasagne; mushroom Stroganoff; bean and celery chilli; or lamb shoulder braised in Jennings Cumberland Ale. Six walks start or end here, including ones to Blencathra and Skiddaw.
