IDDESLEIGH, Winkleigh, EX19 8BG
In a tiny village of pretty cottages, this thatched, cob and stone inn is where local author Michael Morpurgo embarked on his novel War Horse, following conversations in front of the fire with a First World War veteran. Another literary link is Henry Williamson's Tarka the Otter, the Tarka Trail now passes the pub door. An enticing range of real ales includes Bays Topsail from Paignton, and Winkleigh cider from that Devon village. Around 640 years old, the interior bursts at the seams with signs of antiquity: ancient beams and pillars, huge inglenooks and timeworn furniture. The short menu typically offers a three-course meal of smoked duck breast with avocado and mixed leaf salad; whole brill stuffed with prawns, and rich white wine and parsley sauce; and Dunstaple Farm ice cream. Daily specials appear on a blackboard. There's a beer festival in August.
