High Road, HORNDON ON THE HILL, SS17 8LD
In the same family since 1938, this 15th-century coaching inn is steeped in history - you might notice hot cross buns hanging from the original king post supporting the ancient roof timbers. Every year the oldest willing villager hangs another one, an unusual tradition that dates back 100 years to when the pub changed hands on a Good Friday. In the wood-panelled bar, regular brews like Crouch Vale Brewers Gold are backed by a selection of changing guest ales. The lunchtime bar menu offers sandwiches and light meals but booking is essential in the popular restaurant, where the daily-changing menu is driven by seasonal produce. Confit venison and Essex wood pigeon terrine; and prawn bisque for starters perhaps, followed by sautéed calves' liver and bacon, Puy lentil, sautéed chorizo with spinach and caramelised onions; or salmon fillet, saffron aïoli, carrot, leek and mooli spaghetti, crayfish ravioli and mussel velouté.
