On the fringe of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, this 14th-century thatched gem sits in a idyllic village surrounded by wonderful local walks. Although renowned as a foodie destination, the genuinely pubby bar is worth the journey alone and both locals and visitors can revel in well-kept pints of Copper Dragon or Black Sheep whilst eagerly awaiting the call to dine. Chef/patron Andrew Pern's daily-changing seasonal menu crafted largely from local produce has made this one of the jewels in England's culinary crown and people travel from far and wide to sample his innovative cooking. Treat yourself to 'Mulligatawny' of Harome pheasant with Indian spiced raisins, cucumber and onion bhaji with curry oil before moving on to mulled wine-braised ox cheek with smoked bacon, hedgehog mushrooms, Blue Wensleydale mash, carrots and cooking juices. Finish with Star Inn Orchard apple, sultana and roast hazelnut crumble with elderberry ripple ice cream.
