The Star Inn

HAROME, Helmsley, YO62 5JE

This 14th-century thatched gem sits in a beautiful village on the fringe of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Great local walks and a properly pubby bar are worth the journey alone and both locals and visitors can revel in Copper Dragon or Cropton's Two Chefs whilst eagerly awaiting the call to dine. Andrew Pern's daily-changing seasonal menu crafted largely from local produce has made this one of the jewels in England's gastro-pub crown. Treat yourself to grilled black pudding with pan-fried foie gras, salad of Pickering watercress, apple and vanilla chutney and scrumpy reduction before moving on to grilled fillet of sea bass with smoked eel croquettes, fresh horseradish and Lindisfarne oyster velouté. Finish with baked soufflé of forced Yorkshire rhubarb with stem ginger syrup. In the bar the quick of eye might spot the trademark carved mice on the oak furniture created by 'Mouseman' Thompson's works in nearby Kilburn.
