Matthew Boyle, owner of the White Star Tavern in Southampton (see entry) rescued this famous waterside pub from proposed demolition in 2005 and lovingly refurbished it using traditional methods and materials. Old features include exposed beams and brickwork, natural flagstone floors and the wonderful oak bar, while among the new is a large heated terrace with lovely views over the River Hamble - perfect for outdoor dining. A pint of locally-brewed ale makes an ideal partner for one of the deli boards (great for sharing), a roast beef, horseradish crème fraîche and rocket sandwich, or a pub classic like fish pie with buttered greens. From the dining room menu, go for ham hock terrine with home-made piccalilli to start, then order the whole Torbay sole with garlic sauté potatoes and bisque vièrge, and round off with a seasonal fruit crumble with thick custard. For private dining, there is the Captain's Table upstairs.
