The Chequers Inn

Church Street, GOLDHANGER, CM9 8AS

Built in 1410, The Chequers can be found next to the church in picturesque Goldhanger, on the River Blackwater. The pub name comes from a chequerboard used by the tax collector in the pub many, many years ago. At around 30 feet above sea level, it reputedly has the 'lowest' bar in Britain, where you can enjoy perhaps a pint of Adnams Ghost Ship. Several rooms decorated with farming and fishing implements surround the bar area. Pride is taken in the preparation and presentation of food, which includes whole sea bass baked with with fennel and thyme; lamb and mint suet pudding; and aubergine, butternut and walnut bake. There are beer festivals in March and September.
