The Prince Albert

FRIETH, Henley-on-Thames, RG9 6PY

There's no TV, jukebox or electronic games in this cottagey Chiltern Hills pub. What you get instead, surprise, surprise, is just good conversation, probably much as when it was built in the 1700s. In the bar, low beams, a big black inglenook stove, high-backed settles and lots of copper pots and pans; an alternative place to enjoy a pint of Brakspear is a seat in the garden, while admiring the woods and fields. A short menu and regularly changing special board uses locally sourced ingredients for dishes such as smoked mackerel, sautéed potatoes with beetroot and horseradish salad; calves' liver, crispy bacon, onion mash and red wine gravy; and venison stew, creamed leeks and red cabbage.
