Duke of York Inn
FIR TREE,
Crook,
DL15 8DG
On the tourist route (A68) to Scotland, the Duke of York is a former drovers' and coaching inn dating from 1749, and was taken over by new landlord Gavin Bowater at the end of 2011. It has been refurbished inside and out to a high standard, keeping the traditional country feel with contemporary touches. Beers include Black Sheep Best Bitter and Camerons Smooth. Look out for the beer festival - call the pubs for the dates.

A cheqered history of landlords over the past few years, new young couple took over in November 2011 and oh boy! have they got the right formula. Went on Mothering Sunday evening after they had been rushed off their feet with 180 covers for their lunchtime carvery, had the best steak for a long time and excellent service with a big smile.
The Duke is well worth a visit, I'm sure you won't be dissappointed!

On entering this pub we were proudly told that the lady sat in the bar was the new owner, and they had a new chef. This didn't bode well. I had ordered the surf and turf and ended up with a plate of shoe-leather steak, rubber prawns and over-fried potato wedges masquerading as chips. My husband fared slightly better with the gammon, but was also unimpressed with the so-called chips and the rest of teh food on his plate, which somehow included the peas.
