Although there has been a building on this site since the 13th century, the creekside Shipwright's Arms was first licensed in 1738 and has been a well-known spot for sailors and fishermen ever since. Once a popular haunt for pirates and smugglers, this homely brick and weatherboard pub stands in a remote location on the Swale marshes. Best reached on foot or by boat, the effort in getting here is well rewarded as this charming, unspoilt tavern oozes historic character. Step back in time in the relaxed and comfortable bars, which boast nooks and crannies, original timbers, built-in settles, well-worn sofas, wood-burning stoves, and a wealth of maritime artefacts. Locally-brewed Goachers and Whitstable ales are tapped straight from the cask, and make for a perfect match for the simple, traditional bar food: hot smoked mackerel; mushroom Stroganoff; macaroni cheese; sausage, mash and peas; and fresh fish caught by the local trawler.
