Standing at the head of the village green on the A149, the award-winning Crown at East Rudham is part of TV chef Chris Coubrough's thriving Flying Kiwi mini-empire of pubs along the Norfolk coast. It draws the crowds for its charming, spruced-up interior, which successfully blends traditional period features (low beams, rug-strewn wooden floor, open log fires) with contemporary comforts - cool Farrow & Ball colours, high-backed leather chairs at scrubbed tables, shelves of books, fresh flowers and chunky church candles. Equally bang up-to-date is the food, with the menu changing every two weeks and listing good modern British dishes prepared from fresh Norfolk produce. Tuck into salmon and brown shrimp rillettes with toast and caper berries; then follow with roast chump of lamb with roast Mediterranean vegetables, crispy polenta and black olive jus; leaving room for raspberry brûlée tart. Expect decent lunchtime sandwiches and proper kids' food.
