The Jolly Sportsman

Chapel Lane, EAST CHILTINGTON, BN7 3BA

Isolated but well worth finding, Bruce Wass's dining pub enjoys a lovely garden setting on a peaceful dead-end lane looking out to the South Downs. The bar retains some of the character of a Victorian alehouse, with Long Man Best Bitter & Long Blonde on tap, while the dining room strikes a cool, modern-rustic pose. Well-sourced food shines on daily-changing menus, served throughout the pub, from calves' liver in bacon and shallot sauce with colcannon, broccoli and potatoes, to Thai chickpea cakes with crispy aubergine and tofu kofta, garlic spinach, mint yogurt and pepper coulis. Good value fixed-price and children's menus are also available.
