On the Oxfordshire-Buckinghamshire border, Steve and Suzanne Bush's pub was built in 1831 as housing for estate workers, later becoming the village store and beer and cider house. The far-reaching views from its high terraced garden are magnificent, while inside it's a combination of exposed beams, flagged floors and smart, contemporary furniture. Beechwood Bitter and Vale Wychert are on tap, alongside Aspall cider. From a British and eastern Mediterranean-influenced menu, a typical meal would be coriander and white pepper squid, aļoli, chorizo and endive, then braised ox cheek, carrots, horseradish mash, herb crumbs and bone marrow sauce; ending with apple and blackberry crumble and custard. Bar dishes include spaghetti, creamed wild mushrooms, truffle oil and parmesan; and pork belly Thai curry. And if you were wondering about the whimsical name - it recalls two long-gone landlords, 'Moley' and 'Johnny Chick'.
