86 Hallgarth Street, DURHAM, DH1 3AS
This unique listed inn has scarcely changed since it was built in 1899 - not a jukebox, pool table or television to be found. Just five minutes' walk from the cathedral, it has been carefully nurtured by the Webster family for over three decades. Small rooms warmed by coal fires and a congenial atmosphere include the tiny snug, where a portrait of Queen Victoria still hangs above the upright piano. You'll find a few simple snacks to tickle the taste buds, but it's the cracking well-kept local ales, single malts, and over 40 Irish whiskies that are the main attraction.
