The Vine Inn

11 Abingdon Road, CUMNOR, OX2 9QN

A vine does indeed clamber over the whitewashed frontage of this 18th-century village pub. In 1560, nearby Cumnor Place was the scene of the suspicious death of the wife of Lord Robert Dudley, favourite of Elizabeth I; the house was pulled down in 1810. There's a selection of rotating real ales in the carpeted bar, and a typical starters include traditional prawn cocktail; whitebait; or calamari and salad; followed by a meat, fish or oven-baked camembert sharing plate; or perhaps chilli con carne or one of the burger choices. Children love the huge garden.
