The Assheton Arms

A pub since 1872, when it was called the George and Dragon, The Assheton Arms was originally a farmhouse brewing beer for its workers. Renamed in 1950, the current name honours Ralph Assheton, Lord Clitheroe, for his contribution during World War II. Now it's owned by the Seafood Pub Company, which refreshed the stylish restaurant while preserving its traditional village inn credentials. You'll find a great choice of real ales in the bar, including Moorhouse's Pride of Pendle, and local sourcing is key, with fresh fish and seafood supplied daily. The 'little plates and pub snacks' are great - pickled cockles with spiced vinegar, say, or pitta bread with houmous. Starters might take in devilled crab, salmon and brown shrimps with radish and cress salad, or spicy quinoa cakes with sweet potato, chargrilled spring onions, dried tomatoes and tzatziki. There's a daily specials board and a Robata grill - steaks are 28-day dry-aged Lancashire beef - or main courses might include haddock and chips; cod tagine with crab koftas, toasted couscous, pickled lemon, pomegranate and rose petal harissa.
