George and Dragon

CLIFTON, Penrith, CA10 2ER

This lovely pub is more peaceful today than it was in 1745, when the retreating army of 'Bonnie' Prince Charlie was defeated in the nearby village of Clifton. The pub is set on the historic Lowther Estate near Ullswater, where a ruined castle-mansion is set at the heart of pasture, woodland and fells alongside the rushing River Lowther and pretty village of Askham. Meticulously renovated by owner Charles Lowther, this is a traditional inn with contemporary comforts, and the appealing menu majors on the bountiful produce of the estate. Beef is from pedigree Shorthorns; pork from home-reared rare breed stock; while game and most fish is local. Settle in with a pint of Hawkshead Bitter and secure a starter of terrine of smoked venison with salt-baked celeriac, followed by braised Galloway beef pavé, smoked potato purée, and roasted root vegetables; or pan-fried fillet of grey mullet, Parmentier potatoes, salsify, and caramelised queen scallops. Sharing plates, salads, sandwiches and burgers all vie for space on the menu. There is a secluded courtyard and garden.
