Cross Lane, CHURCH MINSHULL, CW5 6DY
This brick-built late 18th-century inn was originally known as the Brook Arms after the local lords of the manor. They had a badger, or 'brock' as part of their crest, hence the current name. The pub is popular with walkers and canal boaters from the nearby Shropshire Union Canal, and in the bar you can sample a draught from the local Weetwood Ales. Start your meal with a Scotch egg or Thai-style fishcakes, before moving on to venison Wellington with fondant potato, butternut squash purée and braised red cabbage; or pan-seared calves' liver with black pudding mash, seasonal veggies and red wine jus.
