The Kings

Facing the square of one of England's prettiest towns, this sympathetically restored old townhouse is packed with character, the oldest parts including the 16th-century stone mullioned windows on the first floor. The bar not only offers real ales but also daily papers and traditional pub games, but no noisy gaming machines. Bar snacks include a good range of sandwiches and baguettes, while main meals are served in the informal bar brasserie or more formal AA-Rosette restaurant overlooking the square. A sample dinner menu offers some imaginative delights: citrus-cured salmon, buttermilk, horseradish, cucumber and tempura prawn; or butter-roast parsnip, beer-braised shallot, honey and crispy leeks to start. Mains include pollock with salt cod croquette and parsley purée; or the venison dish of loin and pie with blackberry, smoked beetroot and kale. The large grassed garden and dining terrace is surprising to find in a town centre pub. Individually decorated bedrooms offer period features with plenty of modern comforts too.
