The Earl of March

Lavant Road, Lavant, CHICHESTER, PO18 0BQ

The current Earl is the founder of the Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival, held on the nearby family estate of the Dukes of Richmond. In the pub in 1803 William Blake wrote the words to Jerusalem; today's visitors can enjoy much the same memorable South Downs' views that influenced his verse. The excellent dishes, courtesy of Giles Thompson, former executive chef at London's Ritz Hotel, depend on local estates and the nearby English Channel. Taking the Earl's Menu, dinner might comprise roast pumpkin and chestnut gnocchi with burnt apple and goats' curd, followed by pan-fried pork fillet, white bean and wild mushroom cassoulet, cavolo nero, rösti and port wine jus; or whole lemon sole meunière, pommes Anna, sautéed sprouting broccoli and sauce béarnaise; and end with pudding of the day. Plenty of bar and lighter meals are offered too.
