Named after the bloodiest battle of the Crimean War, The Alma was built in the late 19th century as an alehouse for soldiers recovering in the neighbouring hospital. The present owners have created a contemporary edge for the pub, and the menu follows suit with a stylish mix of traditional and modern dishes - perhaps pan-fried sea bass fillet with fennel and crayfish risotto and pesto dressing; chicken breast with tarragon and white wine sauce; or Stilton-stuffed fillet of beef with a rich red wine and mushroom sauce. There is a front patio and more secluded rear garden for alfresco dining.
