The Alma

37 Arbour Lane, CHELMSFORD, CM1 7RG

Named after the bloodiest battle of the Crimean War, The Alma was built in the late 19th century as an alehouse for soldiers recovering in the neighbouring hospital. There was a change of hands in early 2012. The menu has a stylish mix of traditional and modern dishes - perhaps pan-fried sea bass fillet with fennel and crayfish risotto and pesto dressing; chicken breast with tarragon and white wine sauce; or stilton-stuffed fillet of beef with a rich red wine and mushroom sauce. There is a front patio and more secluded rear garden for alfresco dining.
