Chedington Lane, CHEDINGTON, Beaminster, DT8 3HY
Sitauted beside National Trust woodlands in a corner of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the old inn's garden commands an extraordinary view across Somerset from the eponymous gap in the sinuous chalk hills. The two counties provide the wherewithal for the August cider festival here, whilst beers from Exmoor and Otter breweries anoint the bar, with its solid rustic seating and tables and a log-burner for the winter nip. The ploughman's lunch takes in the cheeses of the area, or tackle a Dorset-caught sea bass with samphire and crayfish butter sauce. The bargain OAP weekday lunch is popular.
