This award-winning vine-covered Victorian country gastro-pub is tucked away in a sleepy hamlet between Faversham and Whitstable, surrounded by orchards and farmland. It has established a reputation for well-kept Shepherd Neame ales and good food based on locally sourced ingredients. The interior is simple and relaxed with stripped wooden floors and scrubbed tables. Outside is a large formal garden where, appropriately, a dovecote and doves present an agreeably scenic backdrop for an alfresco meal or quiet pint. The Dove's menu is short but nonetheless offers something for most palates and appetites. After breads and olives, fish lovers could enjoy a whole plaice with capers and cockles; local cod with spinach Lyonnaise potatoes; or smoked haddock macaroni with a soft poached hen's egg. If you fancy something heartier, plump for confit pork belly with apple sauce and potato purée, or maybe Kentish pork and ale sausages and mash. For dessert, maybe choose sticky toffee pudding or crème brûlée. Children are offered smaller portions from the main menu. The Dove holds lots of events throughout the year.
