Surrounded by the Buttermere Fells in an outstandingly beautiful area, this 18th-century former coaching inn is set between Buttermere and Crummock Water with lovely walks right from the front door. Good food and real ales are served in the character bars, and a four-course dinner in the dining room might include cushion of Fellside lamb on dauphinoise potatoes with root vegetables and rosemary and redcurrant jus, or roast breast of Gressingham duck on apple and potato rösti.
