Painted an eye-catching turquoise and described by the landlord as a 'shoebox', The Greys delights in its role as a thriving community pub in the bohemian area of Hanover in central Brighton. A compact back-street local, stripped wood and flagstone floors and timber panelled walls give the sense of a country pub in the town, and with the wood-burning stove glowing in the fireplace, there is no finer place to relax with a pint of Harveys bitter or a Breton cider. There is a great selection of Belgian beers, too, and annual Sussex and Belgian beer festival on August Bank Holiday weekend. Former Claridge's chef Roz Batty tantalises the tastebuds with an eclectic, ever-changing menu based on local, seasonal produce, so expect anything from South Downs rabbit pâté with toasted home-made apple bread to meatballs with buttered mash, root vegetable and bean stew with herb dumplings, or game dishes when in season. The Greys is also known for its live country/folk/bluegrass music on Monday nights, featuring many leading artistes.
