Climb the Old Steine towards Kemp Town to find this eye-catching turquoise painted pub. It's a gem, described by the landlord as a 'shoebox', and delights in its role as a thriving community pub in the bohemian area of Hanover in central Brighton. A compact back-street local, stripped wood and flagstone floors and timber panelled walls give the sense of a country pub in the town, and with the wood-burning stove glowing in the fireplace, there is no finer place to relax with a pint of Harveys bitter or a Breton cider. There is a great selection of Belgian beers, too, and annual Sussex and Belgian beer festival on August Bank Holiday weekend. An eclectic, ever-changing menu is based on local, seasonal produce, so expect anything from warm tomato tart with home-made pesto to duck breast on mustard mash with cider jus, and top notch Sunday roasts, perhaps rib of beef with creamed horseradish. The Greys is also known for its live country/folk/bluegrass music on Monday nights, featuring many leading artistes.
