Wrafton, BRAUNTON, EX33 2DE
This postcard-pretty thatched free house beside the popular Tarka Trail dates back to the 16th century and has been owned by the Squire family since the mid-70s. Its prime location sees weary walkers, cyclists and local diners pile in for the pub's famous daily carvery, which always features locally reared meat and seasonal vegetables. Alternatively, you can try Devon scallops in white wine and cream sauce; steak and real ale pie or lighter options like prawn salad or roast turkey panini, perfect washed down with a pint of Sharp's Doom Bar. The carvery proves very popular.
