This former station hotel was built by Brunel for his workers, who were building a box tunnel when stone was sent up north by train to build houses. These days this stylishly transformed inn with five en suite bedrooms is a favourite in the area for eating and drinking. The interior makes good use of wood and flagstone flooring, high-backed oak chairs, leather loungers and handcrafted tables around the bar, where inviting sandwiches, ciabattas and Italian platters hold sway. The main menu ranges from calves' liver and bacon; rack of spring lamb; pan-fried gnocchi; to the pub's speciality fish dishes and great steaks.
