BOWLAND BRIDGE, Grange-over-Sands, LA11 6NN
Very much at the heart of the community, this 17th-century coaching inn even hosts the Post Office on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. In the pretty little hamlet of Bowland Bridge, not far from Bowness, the pub has gorgeous views of Cartmel Fell. Its traditional country-pub atmosphere is fostered by the flagstone floors, stacked logs, wooden tables and mis-matched chairs. Strong links with local suppliers bring exclusively reared pork and lamb to the menu, and an excellent range of Cumbrian ales to the bar. At lunchtime hot or cold sandwiches are available, in addition to hearty plates such as Fell House Farm trio of lamb cutlets with mint and rosemary gravy; or a special of home-made cottage pie stuffed with minced Tulithwaite Hall beef and topped with creamy mash. Also home made are desserts such as individual rhubarb and ginger crumble, served with your choice of cream, ice cream or custard.
