The Cross, BERWICK ST JOHN, SP7 0HA
The Talbot Inn used to be three cottages, one of them the village shop, before becoming an alehouse in 1835. This typical old English country free house in the beautiful Chalke Valley dates from the 17th century and has the beams, low ceilings and huge inglenook fireplace so typical of its kind. Good home-cooked food might include grilled Cajun-style chicken breast with Creole salad and sautéed potatoes; slow-roast pork belly, black pudding, sage and onion stuffing and crackling; and Moroccan tagine with lemon herb couscous.
