Debbie Shaw's family has run this popular 17th-century coaching inn for more than half a century. With an abundance of oak beams, open fires, carved settles, and jazz playing quietly in the background, a relaxed time is guaranteed here and Debbie and husband/chef Carl have picked up a number of impressive accolades in the 12 years they have been at the helm. With a clear preference for using local produce including pork reared by the owners themselves, Carl develops appealing menus that always feature steak and Old Stockport ale pie, and may well include pork and tomato sausages on minted mash with red wine gravy or roast chicken breast in white wine, celery and lovage sauce. Rhubarb mousse with Cognac ice cream is one of the tempting desserts. A snack or sandwich in the attractive beer garden, followed by a game of boules is well worth considering in summer.
