Holmes Chapel Road, ALLOSTOCK, WA16 9JY
This 300-year-old former farmhouse is a stylishly eclectic dining pub. Inside is a warren of atmospheric rooms, replete with exposed beams, rugs on wooden floors, crackling log fires in brick fireplaces, fat candles on old dining tables, and a host of quirky touches to make you smile. Go there for a choice of five local ales and over 50 brandies behind the bar, and some cracking pub food - seafood sharing plate; potted beef with stout piccalilli; cod loin with shrimp butter; duck leg and haricot bean stew; apple and Calvados crumble, and an imaginative choice of sandwiches. Book ahead for the memorable Sunday lunches. Dogs are welcome in the snug and the garden.
