George Inn

High Street, ALFRISTON, BN26 5SY

First licensed to sell beer as far back as 1397, this splendid Grade II listed flint and half-timbered inn is set in a picturesque South Downs' village. The heavy oak beams and ancient inglenook fireplace add plenty of character to the bar, whilst the kitchen serves delights such as rustic boards to share; crayfish, crab and salmon tian; grilled sardines with a rocket, red pepper and tomato salad; traditional coq-au-vin with mashed potatoes and vegetables and double-baked pistachio cheesecake with cherry compôte and crème anglaise to finish. A network of smugglers' tunnels leads from the pub's cellars.
