For centuries lucky locals have been enjoying this old pub in the quintessential Chilterns village of Aldbury beneath the beech woods of Ashridge Park. The Duke of Wellington allegedly discussed strategy with his troops here; when the famous warrior died it was named in his honour. Now in the safe hands of Wendy Greenall, the bar proffers six real ales and the promise of a beer festival; telephone for details. Choice is there too on the menu, which ranges through pub favourites such as jackets and ploughman's, to smoked haddock fishcakes; or Brick Oak Farm sausages and mash.
