Learner drivers are being targeted for intimidation by road rage 'idiots' according to the AA, whose driving instructors have reported a catalogue of serious incidents across the UK. AA Driving School is calling for more consideration towards learners, after a national panel of instructors pointed to examples of hostile, bullying and reckless behaviour towards pupils.

With more snow falling across many areas today, the AA has announced that it has rescued more than half a million drivers since the snow first arrived on the evening of 17 December 2009. It has attended around 544,000 breakdowns – more than double its normal workload – making it the busiest winter ever for breakdowns in the AA's 105-year history.

Almost a fifth of AA members (19%) know someone who has driven while suffering from a medical condition knowing they should not have driven, according to new research from the AA revealed today at the ACPO/Police Federation conference. Yet just 2% of AA members admit that they themselves have driven when suffering from a medical condition when they knew they should not have been driving.

An average UK petrol car now costs 89p a day more in fuel compared to the same time last year, the latest mid-monthly AA Fuel Price Report reveals. For a family with two, the 25p difference between what they pay now for a litre of petrol and what they paid in January 2009 leaves a £12.46 hole in their weekly budget.

The AA is asking motorists to spare a thought for the families of more than 4,200 young drivers who failed to see out the first decade of the millennium due to fatal accidents over the last 10 years. Official figures reveal that more than 40,000 drivers aged 29 or younger – equal to the population of Salisbury – have been killed or seriously injured on UK roads since 2000. Some 11,700 of these were teenagers.

Average UK petrol prices have risen above £5 a gallon for the first time in 15 months, sending a chilling warning to drivers for 2010. The average pump price of petrol rose to 110.04p a litre yesterday, with diesel now costing 111.77p. A year ago petrol cost 85.99p and diesel 98.06.

The AA now expects today (Monday) to be its busiest day ever, according to its records, with more than 25,000 breakdowns. The UK's biggest breakdown organisation is continuing to deploy extra patrols and has all its specially-equipped Land Rovers working in the snow-affected areas. Priority is being given to drivers in the most vulnerable situations.
