Carry on Camping

Beat the recession with a holiday under canvas

Man sitting beside a tent on the shore of Wast Water in the Lake District National Park Research suggests that many camping novices will brave the great outdoors this year, to make their money go further. So whether you're a seasoned professional or a camping virgin, check out this year's award-winning campsites.

Eight sites across England, Wales and Scotland have made the grade for 2009 – but if none of these locations appeal then why not search for an AA-rated site elsewhere? Take your pick from campsites across the UK and Ireland with our handy, free online search facility. There's even a naturist campsite if that floats your boat.

We've also rounded up the cream of campsites close to Blue Flag-accredited beaches.

Top tips for happy campers

  • Use a checklist to make sure you pack all the essentials (matches, mallet, torch, earplugs etc)
  • Be prepared and pack for all weather conditions
  • Entertain the neighbours – practice setting up and packing away your tent before you go
  • Check your pitch to ensure a smooth and comfortable area under your tent
  • Protect your tent with ground sheets, and mark your guy lines with colourful electrical tape

Pennant Power

Barafundle Bay, Dyfed, Wales AA-inspected caravan and camping parks are rated from one up to five Pennants according to their style and the range of facilities they offer. So when you search for a campsite, it's easy to find the Pennant rating that offers the best value for you. But while AA one- and two-Pennant campsites offer a simple or good standard of facilities, a high Pennant score shows that you still can expect a quality service. Add all this to a small, cosy site in a great location, and you've got a winner.

Festival fever

Of course camping is an essential part of the festival experience for many. Check out our lowdown on the UK's biggest annual summer music events.

If you only have a day ticket but fancy staying over, search online for a campsite or a B&B near the festival and extend the fun.

Tow job

Caravanning is a good compromise for nature lovers who need a few creature comforts. If you don't have one of your own, why not try a static caravan or a chalet in a good location?
