Most car hire companies charge an excess if you have an accident – this means that you will be responsible for the first part of the claim. Some excesses can be up to £1,000.

Car Hire Excess Reimbursement Insurance
Most car hire companies include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) when you hire a car. With CDW any accidental damage is covered under the car's insurance. However, car hire companies may charge an excess for any repairs – the proportion you pay towards the cost. These excesses can be up to £1,000 each time.
Some companies offer insurance policies to reduce or remove this excess – up to £16 for each day of the hire. This can add over £100 to the rental cost just for one week. And often these policies are available only at the rental desk in the small print, just when you and your family want to get off to your desination.
