About the award
Introduced in 1992, this award is the AA’s ultimate accolade for hotels in the UK. It is awarded to hotels that are recognised as being outstanding examples in their particular market.
From the small family-run hotel to the most ambitious commercial ventures, hotels of every size and style are potential winners.
Set in a historic market town, this old posting inn started life in 1829. While retaining plenty of character, it has been modernised and upgraded by a series of extensive refurbishments.
Working with a local business called The Art Shop, the company that own the hotel have introduced artwork, paints and decorating techniques that enhance the decor and ensure that this is a very individual property.
Over the years, many well-known people have stayed here, including film royalty such as Gregory Peck, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Lounges and bars are always bustling with locals having a coffee, guests relaxing after exploring the local area or people enjoying the very special afternoon tea.
It is one of only nine hotels outside of London that are members of the prestigious Tea Guild and they hold an award of excellence, so you can be assured of a very special experience. The restaurant serves brasserie style food which has achieved an AA Rosette. The bedrooms are beautifully furnished, with Villeroy and Boch or Fired Earth bathroom fittings, pocket-sprung beds, and Lewis and Wood fabrics.
This is a very stylish, well run property which stands out as being something a little bit special and is a well worthy winner of AA Hotel of the Year for Wales.
