Our instructor training course aims to help you become a successful instructor through the use of learning tools and techniques to help you develop your skills. You'll receive 1-to-1 training from a fully qualified AA driving instructor trainer.
At the AA, we are ahead of our competitors in pioneering a new online learning system. This effective and efficient learning means you can undertake your training anytime, anyplace, anywhere. So you can train at a pace and location that fits in with your other commitments and lifestyle.
Your course will probably take between 6 and 18 months to complete. Online learning supports all three parts of your driver training and can be revisited as many times as you need.
In addition to the online system you'll receive reference books and other supporting online materials. You'll also receive 54 hours of 1-to-1 training with your own instructor trainer.
To become a qualified Driving Standards Agency (DSA) Approved Driving Instructor, you'll need to pass three parts of the DSA test.
Part 1 – theoryWorking at home and using the online activities, and other supporting materials, you'll work through this part of the course and arrange the test when you're ready. Your instructor trainer will give you two hours of support for this part. You'll be tested on road procedure traffic signs and signals, driving test and laws and instructional techniques.
Practical driving sessions with one of our qualified trainers will focus on bringing your personal standard of driving up to the high level required by the DSA. Your trainer – local to your area – will prepare you for a one-hour practical test of your driving ability. We'll provide the in-car and online support you need to attain the high standard of competence required. You'll get 12 hours of 1-to-1 training, and additional time for 1-to-2 training in an in-car buddy-system.
Part 3 – Instructional abilityIn this part of the test you'll demonstrate that you can teach others. In two half-hour sessions the examiner acts as a pupil in a role-play situation. For this module you'll receive 40 hours of 1-to-1 training with your AA trainer.
After passing all three parts of the DSA test you'll be awarded a green badge that means you're a fully qualified instructor.
You'll have the individual support of a highly skilled trainer who will be dedicated to helping you become a fully qualified driving instructor.
There are three payment options for our driving instructor training:
Option 1 – advance payment
Pay in advance for the whole course and save £299 over the combined price of paying as you train.
Option 2 – instalment payment plan
Pay for the complete course, from £145 per month, spreading the cost over affordable instalments during a set period of time. Instalment plan options are subject to credit checks.
Option 3 – pay as you train
Pay for each course module as you train.
After successfully completing your instructor training with us, you’ll be able to receive valuable discounts when you take up the AA driving instructor franchise.
If you're interested in developing your career as an instructor, we offer you ongoing learning support with workshops and courses.
After you qualify, you'll automatically have the option of taking up an AA Driving School franchise, with up to £1,500 discount on your first six months' fees. After 24 calendar months of continuously holding our standard franchise, you'll receive up to a further £1,100 payment by cheque.
An AA franchise gives you the flexibility of being your own boss and choosing your hours to fit around your other commitments.
The £1,100 cashback offer applies only to new AA driving instructors who have purchased the complete training course. This cashback is in addition to the £1,500 discount on your first six months' franchise fees.
