Built between 1340 and 1345, the original house is perfectly preserved. Enlarged by successive owners during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, the great variety of architectural styles creates a dramatic backdrop for the extensive collections of English, French and Italian furniture, tapestries and paintings. The chestnut-beamed Baron's Hall is one of the oldest and finest in the country, and the house is set in magnificent formal gardens. There is a toy museum, adventure playground, woodland trail, 11 acres of walled formal gardens and events throughout the season. The re-designed double herbaceous border will be officially reopened in 2012. Penshurst is a popular choice as a film and television location.
