Sandham Memorial Chapel

Harts Lane, BURGHCLERE, Newbury, RG20 9JT

Write a review

This red brick chapel was built in the 1920s for the artist Stanley Spencer to fill with paintings inspired by his experiences in WWI. Influenced by Giotto's Arena Chapel in Padua, Spencer took 5 years to complete what is arguably his finest achievement. The chapel is set amongst lawns and orchards with views over Watership Down. The chapel has no internal lighting, so it's best to visit on a bright day. The chapel's architect Lionel Pearson of Adams, Holden and Pearson was also involved in the design of the Royal Artillery Memorial in London.
