An Elizabethan house, dating from 1575, said to have been built for Walter Kelland, a wealthy merchant. The building houses archaeological and social history collections and a room dedicated to Charles Babbage, inventor of the Difference Engine, a pre-cursor of modern computers. Study centre archives located at the rear of the museum. 2012 is the 50th anniversary of the museum and there will be year long celebrations.
