Car insurance tips for women

Looking for a cheap quote?

Gender-based quotes are illegal – but there are other ways of keeping the costs down

Female driver? Before 21 December 2012, insurers were able to quote you a cheaper price – because evidence showed that young men were more of a liability behind the wheel than young women.

Now, however, the EU Gender Directive ruling has made it illegal for insurers to calculate premiums based on your gender. Because of this, women have seen their car insurance costs rise by up to 30%.

Tips for women

Young female drivers pay the price

Although insurers can no longer consider your gender, your age is still a major factor. If you’re under 25, you’ll be quoted a higher premium because young drivers are a higher risk category – they’re more likely to be involved in an accident and make a claim.

The good news

The good news is that women still appear to pay less for their car insurance overall. This is because gender was just one of many factors that insurers take into account when calculating your premium:

  • Your age.
  • The type of car you drive.
  • Annual mileage.
  • The area where you live.
  • Security devices and modifications.
  • Claims, incidents and motoring convictions.
