Standing in its own 20-acre grounds, with an ornamental lake, walled garden and secluded seating areas, this splendid Georgian mansion was built in 1825 for the Dunbar family, but there has been occupation on the site since the 16th century. Hospitality here is first class; the owners are passionate about what they do, and have a real ability to establish a special relationship with their guests. The food is memorable; head chef Charlie Lockley is a devotee of slow and organic cooking which also includes using foraged produce. The five-course dinners are a culinary adventure, matched only by the excellence of breakfasts. The house itself is delightful, with inviting lounges and a dining room overlooking a trout loch. The bedrooms, with lake and woodland views, are striking and very comfortable; Orangerie Rooms have their own conservatory.
