BMW were allowed a retest after introducing modification to the airbag sensing for frontal impact, and structural modifications to the door to improve the side impact performance. These modifications were incorporated into production in May 2002. The structure performed well with only relatively modest deformation of the passenger cell after the frontal and side impact. The side impact protection was reasonable but the chest loads were on the high side. The manufacturer also decided to update these results by showing the benefit of the optional head impact airbag. The protection from the child restraints was not uniformly good and the pedestrian protection was poor.
