Bearing more than a passing resemblance to the Range Rover, the Ford Explorer is a large SUV which has a long and popular history in the US, but little legacy in the UK. Priced toward the top end of the market, its luxury leanings are on display in its lavishly finished cabin and its alluring design. Like its sleek looks might suggest, the Explorer is best suited to life on tarmac, but it boasts some hard wearing materials and good engine options (the 4.0 litre petrol engine is the most commonly found in the UK), which make it more rugged than your standard softroader. Only having been available on British shores for a brief time in the late 90s, the Explorers on offer are often more dated than some might wish for, but they are rugged and reliable, and so are still an option worth considering.
