A whitewashed country inn buried in the sumptuous Ceiriog Valley, The Hand makes a concerted effort to come up to rustic expectations inside, with dozing dogs toasting themselves before the open fires, plenty of chunky furniture and brass ornaments, and a stuffed fox standing sentinel in the hallway. The kitchen turns out impressive renditions of classic and modern pub food, beginning in time-honoured style with chicken liver pâté with fruit chutney and hot toast, and continuing with honey-roasted duck with tomato ragoût and red wine sauce. Finish in heart-warming fashion with a dark chocolate and rum crème brûlée, or Welsh cheeses and oatcakes.
