Enticing cooking in classy 18th-century inn

Wines by the glass

While fully respecting its listed status, the 18th-century Vernon is now a sleek, contemporary 21st-century inn with boutique rooms. Lightwood furniture looks good in the bar, while the four-roomed dining area sports wooden chairs upholstered in coloured fabrics; outside, tables shelter under huge green umbrellas. Relaxed but attentive service will bring you modern European/British dishes such as citrus-cured salmon, chilli and lime crab, avocado purée and caviar; assiette of lamb, carrot purée, dauphinoise potatoes and rosemary jus; and chocolate tart, caramel pecans, and banana and lime ice cream. The wine list echoes The Vernon's style.
