Satisfying grub in a convivial pub

AA Inspector

Ancient oak panelling and flagstone floors confirm the pedigree of this veteran coaching inn, which continues life as a high-street hub of local goings-on into the 21st century. The kitchen keeps step with the times, sending out starters such as seared pigeon breast with Merlot-poached pear, celeriac purée and blueberry jus. Main dishes run a broadly based course from beer-battered fish and chips to steaks from the Josper oven and more ambitious offerings like chicken ballotine with pancetta, sweet potato, smoked cauliflower purée and creamy chicken jus. To finish, perhaps apple and quince crumble with spiced cardamom crème brûlée and pear sorbet.
